Geocache Description:

Fort McAllister Historic Site

Cache information:

Steward: RangerDoc
Park: Fort McAllister Historic Site
Cache type: Multi
Difficulty: 1.5
Terrain: 2
Cache Description: This is a 4 stage multi cache. You must visit each stage posted in the additional waypoint section below. At each stage you will gather a part of the 4 digit combination that unlocks the ammo can at the "final location" (Inside the office).

This geocache is only available during museum operating hours, 9am-5pm. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. There is an admittance fee of $5.00-$9.00 to get into the museum. The park is open 7am-10pm. The standard Georgia State Parks parking fee of $5.00 or annual pass is also required.  With one mile of walking, you'll need 30-45 minutes to visit the stages and open the geocache.

*First you need to go to the visitor’s center and pay your daily fee. While at the welcome desk, pick up a pamphlet for the self-guided tour…it will make your visit much more interesting!

Paper and a writing instrument will prove useful as you gather information for the combination. This Geocache will be visited by non/new geocachers. It's recommended that you don't leave trackables in the Geocache.  The posted coordinates are for stage one.

Stage 1.  Read the marker post indicating a stop along the self-guided tour.  Find the number on the marker post and subtract 2 from that number.  This number = "A".

Stage 2.  Read the Cheves' Rice Mill historical marker.  According to the sign, General Sherman watched the reduction of Fort McAllister on December "XX", 1864.  Subtract 3 from "XX" and the first digit of your answer = "B", and the second digit of your answer = "C".

Stage 3.  Read the wooden plate above the door.  It has information about the Mortar Battery. This wooden plate has a 2-digit number on it. Subtract 3 from that number. This number = “D”.

Complete the self-guided tour.

To unlock the ammo can, return to the welcome desk at the visitor’s center and ask for the geocache. Use “ABCD” for the combination to open the lock. If you trade for items from the geocache, remember to trade for something that is of equal or greater value.

Georgia State Parks History Trails:

The History Trail is the coolest new phase of the Geo-Challenge. For starters, there are 14 new historic sites and parks. Thirteen of these sites -- including this one -- are Multi-Caches, where you'll visit a number of locations (solving clues) that will give you the secret combination to open the geocache. Inside you'll find new prizes: History Trading Cards! New Sites, New rules, new prizes... but still the same fun and adventure of Georgia State Parks Geo-Challenge. So whether you're a first-time or a seasoned pro, you can "Get Out. Get Dirty. And Get Fit" in a Georgia State Park today!

How to Hit the History Trail:

The History Trail crosses the entire state and features 14 new Historic Sites and Historic Parks! Each site has multiple locations that you will need to visit in order to solve several clues. Once they are solved and you’ve figured out the secret combination, to unlock the geocache, you’ll collect your History Trail Trading Card. (Please take only one.The card corresponds to the site and the historic group to which it belongs. Each historic group has multiple cards (Native Americans has 4 cards, Forts has 3 cards, Historic Homes has 2 cards, Plantations has 3 cards, Museums/Battlefields has 2 cards.) When you’ve completed a set (either by visiting or trading) you can turn them into a Ranger to receive your custom souvenir tokens! Since there are 5 historic groups, you can collect all 5 souvenir tokens!
