Diabase werden wegen ihrer Farbe auch als „Grünstein“ bezeichnet. Die grünliche Farbe entsteht durch Umwandlung – auch Gesteinsmetamorphose genannt - der Mineralien durch sich ändernde Temperaturen und/oder Druckbedingungen.
In Deutschland sind Diabase in den Mittelgebirgen weit verbreitet; sie entstanden im Devon und Karbon.
In der Steinzeit wurde der Diabas primär für Werkzeuge wie Äxte und Beile benutzt, seine heutige Verwendung ist vor allem im Bereich des Straßenbaus und der Grabsteinen. Diabas hat den Vorteil, dass es sich sehr gut schleifen und polieren lässt, weshalb er sehr beliebt bei Steinbildhauern ist.
Der hier zu findende Deckdiabas entstand im Mississippium – früher als Unterkarbon bezeichnet – durch untermeerische Lavaströme.
