ABOUT THE CHURCH
The present church is partly Norman having been built somewhere in the early 1200's. The original Norman church consisted of the current nave (the north and west walls), the northern doorway, the crypt and a very small chancel. It has been suggested that a wooden Saxon church could have predated the Norman one as the church is built on a circular mound.
Many changes have been made to the church building over the centuries. The church is usually open and it is worth stepping inside to see the wall paintings on the North Wall of St. Eugenie (said to be unique in England), St. Mary Magdalene and St. Agnes which date from the 1300's.
All the clues are clearly visible from the paths so there is no need to walk on the grass.
