Geocache Description:

THE SANCTUARY

The cache is located approximately 1km inland from Bondi Beach in a pocket of rainforest.

Thomas Hogan Reserve is an unusual park.. A lawn in an almost hidden little steep-edged bowl of trees, approaching rainforest in its density in complete contrast with the area around it.

It's named after THOMAS HOGAN "Father of Waverley Council". Alderman for 22 consecutive years (1933-1955). Mayor of Waverley 1940, 1943, 1949.

Known as "Bondi Glen" in the 1800s, it later became known as "Glen Roona Reserve and Bird Sanctuary"

The central lower level grass lawn is almost completely surrounded by mature trees.

The steep sides to the south and west are heavily vegetated, and scattered with large sandstone rocks.
It provides a sanctuary for local birds.

Bird life includes Currawongs, Kookaburras, Lorikeets and Noisy Miners. Bats and Possums live in the reserve.

There is a Girl Guide Hall to one side and in the centre of the reserve at the back, a set of timber steps and platforms leading up to Martins Avenue. There is playground equipment and the cache is kid friendly.
Enter via Francis Street or Martins Avenue
