Veverka obecna (Sciurus vulgaris) patri k nejznamejsim a nejoblibenejsim zviratum nasi prirody. Je soucasne take jednim z nejhodnejsich zvirat v lesich Evropy a Asie. Veverky se v hojnem poctu vyskytuji rovnez v Ceskem Krumlove.
Zakladni potravou veverek jsou orisky a semena, ale nepohrdnou ani jinou rostlinnou potravou, houbami ci hmyzem. Je o nich znamo, ze stravu si doplnuji i o ptaci vejce, mladata ptaku a plazy. Vsechny veverky drzi potravu v prednich koncetinach, sedi na zadecku a kousou. Rezaky jim rostou po cely zivot. Mnohe veverky si schovavaji potraviny do zeme, napr. zaludy. Casto vsak zapominaji, kam si zasoby ulozily, a neumyslne tak rozsevaji semena rostlin.
Veverka je prekvapive samotarsky tvor, az na obdobi namluv. K pareni dochazi vetsinou po zimnim spanku, v mirnem pasmu obvykle na jare. Samecek svou vyvolenou honi po lese tak dlouho, dokud se nenecha ocichat a premluvit na navstevu sameckova hnizda. Jeste nekolik tydnu spolu laskuji, dokud samicka nevrhne mlade. V tu chvili samicka partnera zazene a o rodinu pecuje sama.
V prvni polovine 20.stoleti byli veverky loveny jako skodna zver a vyuzivany pro jejich kozesinu a chutne maso. Nyni patri ke chranenym druhum.

Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is one of the most known and most favorite animals of Bohemian nature. It’s also one of the most frequent animal within European and Asian forrests. Squirrels are very frequent in area of Cesky Krumlov as well.
Between Squirrel’s basic food belongs nuts and seeds, but Squirrels don’t defy with miscellaneous vegetal food, mushrooms or insects. It’s known that Squirrels eke their food out with bird eggs, bird whelps and reptiles. All Squirrels eat food while holding it in front paws and sitting on their back. Incisive teeth grow them throughout whole life. Lots of Squirrels hide food under the ground, e.g. acorns. It’s quite ususal that they forget where they hided such reserves and that’s how they help to spread and sown seeds of different plants.
Squirrel is surprisingly very reclusive being until period of courting. Squirrel’s copulation follows after winter dormancy, in temperate zone usually during the spring season. Squirrel male chases his bride elect all over the forrest until she gets sniffed and persuaded to visit his nest. They gallivant each other for several more weeks, until she cubs. At that time she drives her partner off and takes care of whole family all alone.
In the first half of 20th century Squirrels were hunted as a vermin animals and used for their furs and tasty meat. In these days they belong to list of protected species.
