Two giant granite Foo dogs guard the new 10th Street Plaza. This new gateway to Chinatown has transformed a dirty stretch of concrete into an open, brightly lit plaza complete with benches, tables, and an asian-style pergoda. The makeover was designed to turn a no-man's land into a welcoming connector, helping to join Chinatown to the fast-growing neighborhood that constitutes "Chinatown North". The Gateway took 6 years to plan at a cost of $300,000.
The Foo dogs were carved in Fujian Province, China, shipped to NY, and trucked to Phildelphia. Each weighs 7 tons.
On the south side sits the female, her paw on a cub. To the north squats the male, his paw on a globe. The male is doubtless the most anatomically correct Foo dog ever to appear in Philadelphia.
Many people who live and work in the Chinatown area traverse 10th St. everyday - now stepping past a new plaza.
