This cache has been archived.

The Lambs @ 9: We have been to check on this cache and unfortunately it is missing. The container was specially sourced to match the cache and we have been unable to source a replacement so with regret we will have to archive this cache. Unfortunately there were Trackables in the cache. We will check again and if the cache is missing we will release the Trackables again on a Travel Twin.

Geocache Description:

This small "clip n lock" cache is situated close to one of only 4 WW2 Pillboxes left in the Darlington Area. As a result of concerns over the integrity of the original structure we have move and increased the size of the original cache. As Darlington doesn't seem to have a TB Hotel near to the A1 we have made this into one.

A few rules for the TB Hotel

- There should always be a TB in the hotel.
- You should only trade one TB in for another.
- There is no limit to the amount of TB's you trade, but as this is a TB Hotel please leave some for other cachers.
- As the Box is quite small, please trade only small items if there
aren't any TB's.

British hardened field defenses of World War II or Pillboxes as they were more commonly know were small fortified structures constructed as a part of British anti-invasion preparations in WW2.

In May 1940, the directorate of Fortifications and Works (FW3) was set up to provide a number of basic pillbox designs which could be constructed by soldiers and local labour at appropriate defensive locations.

The degree of protection offered by a pillbox varied considerably dependent on the method of construction.

The Pillbox that you can see close to the cache location (looking to the west) is a Prefabricated pillbox of a Type 26 variant. know as a ‘stent’ after the company that produced the prefabricated components(Stent Precast Concrete).

Originally the war time defences of Darlington comprised of:

28 Pillboxes (24 have been removed)

10 Road-blocks (all have been removed)

6 Anti-tank ditches and obstacles (all have been removed)

The other pill boxes are in the Darlington can be found at the following locations:

At Blackwell (North east of the bridge)
A brick shuttered pillbox without a roof.
Type 26
N 54° 30.479 W 001° 34.965

At Croft Road 1996/06/06 Pillbox, variant (lozenge)
Type 22
N 54° 30.310 W 001° 34.417

Harrogate Hill 1996/06/06 Pillbox, variant (lozenge).
Type 22
N 54° 33.297 W 001° 32.324

Parking is available in Blackwell Village and is shown as a waypoint. Please be considerate when parking as there can be limited space at times for local residents.

The Pillbox can be accessed from the riverbank footpath on the south east side of the bridge but you will need to go down a small incline from the road in order to access this path so please be careful.

The land approimately 50yd to the north east of the bridge is private and is signed accordingly please do not pass this sign.

Please DO NOT enter the pillboxes for your own safety.

This cache is NOT wheelchair or stroller accessible due to the uneven ground.

Please rehide the cache carefully as found.
Thanks The Lambs @ 9
