Geocache Description:

Preston, which now forms part of the town of Faversham, is a settlement of Anglo-Saxon origin. Preston itself means Priest's farmstead or manor and from Anglo-Saxon times to the Reformation was actually owned by the Monks of Christ Church, Canterbury. It is referred to in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Prestetone.

In 1716, there were but 16 families in the parish. The population was 220 at the time of the first national census in 1801. In 1831 the population was 673. There was a great increase in population after the coming of the railway to Faversham in 1858. At the time of the 1871 census, the population stood at 2007. At the present time the population is around 3,500.

The coordinates given are for the recommended parking in St Mary’s Road where you can park free for 2 hours. From here it is a short walk over Preston Railway Footbridge. To find the cache you will need to refer to the webpage www.faversham.org where much of this information comes from and search in the community tab for information on churches or just use Google!

The Coordinates given are for parking in St Mary’s road Faversham. If you park at the top end the church yard can be reached by walking over the railway footbridge. Parking is free for 2 hours. You can also park in the residential streets near the Church for a short time (single Yellow lines). It is possible to do a cache and dash.

The church can not always be accessed but in the sanctuary is the impressive marble tomb erected in 1629 by Richard Boyle, first Earl of Cork 1566-1643), in memory of his parents, Roger and Joan (nee Naylor). They are the recumbent figures on the tomb; they lived in Preston Parish until their respective deaths in 1576 and 1586. The fifth son of Richard, was the famous scientist Robert Boyle who discovered by experiment the inversely proportional relationship between volume and pressure at a constant temperature.

So being a bit of a Scientist myself I thought it would be nice to make this link as part of the church micro series. To get the coordinates of the actual cache, use the website www.faversham.org or google to find out the date of birth and death of Robert Boyle (ABCD) (EFGH).

The cache can be found at

N51°A(G-H).BAC E000°(B-A)(A+C).(F-E)1D

Please replace the cache carefully. It is a busy spot at times and overlooked, so use stealth. I suggest sitting in the churchyard to sign the log before replacing.

Please feel free to expand this series but I would just ask that you let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
