Geocache Description:

This is a small cache located next to an old bitumenous sandstone quarry. You can park at the Cow Palace parking lot, and walk a short distance to the cache. Cache contains only the log sheet, and a special cash prize for the FTF. BYOP. Enjoy.......

Congrats to OP for the FTF!

The sandstone you see in the outcrop just to the north of the cache location is laiden with Bitumen, which a very low grade petroleum product used for many things from road making material, to home construction. The history of Bitumen use goes way back to the third century BC, where it was used to line baskets, and this particular quarry was used by the local indians, and later on for making asphalt. The old Pacific Coast Railway had a spur going here to load the material in the 1880s. (See Gallery)
