Stone has been used for variety of purposes including using its natural beauty in pieces of public art. So the question is, aside from having artistic merit, can public art can provide geology lessons?
The posted co-ordinates will take you just outside one of the entrances to the Roma Street Parklands. Here you will find three pieces of stone, that have been polished to give the appearance of water ripples.
The stone you will notice, is different to that commonly used in the Brisbane CBD area.
Q1 What is the stone used?
Q2 Where does the stone originate?
The polished surface of the blocks allows a good view of the stone texture. A torch may help to reveal all when there is low light or at night.
Q3 Briefly describe the three components that make up the texture?
You will notice that there are vertical lines running down the outside of the blocks.
Q4 What do you think these lines are?
Q5 What purpose do the lines serve?
As this is an Earthcache, its the geological interpretation and not artisitic interpretation that we are seeking!
