This cache is found on the slopes of Kanonkop in Fernkloof Nature Reserve where there are a few other caches to suit all types of fitness and hike length.
It is not on the top of Kanonkop, but rather a little way above the view of the stone cannon seen below and from which the peak gets its name. It was a welcome shade spot in the late morning. It is on the red route which is a medium hike.
When I place the cache the spot was guarded by this magnificent specimen of the national flower of South Africa - the King Protea or Protea cynaroides which is found along the route as well - it flowers throughout the year so you may be lucky in spotting this one or one of the other plants in flower.
As the name of the cache suggests there is also a good view of Danger Point across Walker Bay framed by the valley you are in.
Danger Point originally named Ponte de Sao Brandao by Bartholomew Dias on 16 May 1488. The English name came about because of the treacherous reef and submerged rocks that reach out to sea from the point making it hazardous for ships hugging the coast. The British troopship H.M.S. "Birkenhead" carrying troops and their families to Port Elizabeth was wrecked on the reef of Danger Point on the 25 February 1852. Danger Point lighthouse built in 1895 guards the point and is visible on the spit of land to the right of Gansbaai.
