Geocache Description:

This cache is #9 of 16 in the series Central Jersey Jigsaw Puzzle Challenge.

Each of the 16 caches contains a jigsaw puzzle piece. Visit each cache, take a piece, and assemble the puzzle to learn the Playfair Keyword needed to decipher the coords for the final hide.

Please only take a puzzle piece if you intend to do all 16 jigsaw puzzle setup caches. You don't need to take one to log this specific cache. The cache is an ammo box. Please take the time to completely re-hide the cache as found so that it will not be muggled.

This cache was placed to memorialize the now archived cache Nike Road that was located 0.1 mile away and was my 61st cache find back in October of 2005. The following is taken from that original cache listing:
Did you know there were missile bases that ringed major cities in the US back in the 50's & early 60s!? In areas that are now residential suburbs! Here's a remnant of one of those bases.

The cache is hidden off of an abandoned road that I've see referred to as Nike Road. I don't see that listed in mapquest or elsewhere. Might have been on a map in Summit Town Hall. Here's a couple pages about this base and Nike bases in general.

This cache is hidden off a road that used to be used to access the guidance part of the Nike missile base in the Watchung Reservation. The land where the guidance part of the base was located is now a regional high school. The area where the missiles were located in the valley of the reservation is now the Watchung Stables. Like the Dead Center cache, this one uses a bridge built over Route 78 that isn't used for cars!

The closest official parking is at the Deserted Village N40 41.002, W074 23.295. You could also park at the high school at the top of the hill, walk east along their ball fields and then through the opening in the fence to get to the top of the road and walk down.

Enjoy your visit and thanks to JRTTeam for their original listing. If you have not already done so, be sure to visit their nearby 8 year old Dead Center cache.
