Geocache Description:

Yeah you read that right...a 30 second flashmob. But no, it is neither a flash mob nor will it last for only 30 seconds. Read below for details on our fourth event:

If you want examples and a boring, technical explaination of what Light Painting is, you can click here or you can just know that it's pretty much what it says it is. We'll be using a camera in a dark area and opening the shutter for an extended amount of time (about 30 seconds). During that time, YOU will be moving lights around to draw a large, collaborative picture in thin air which will show up on the camera.

When:
January 28, 2012
Arrive at the event location by 7:00pm. We will be getting set up and handing out photo assignments at this time.

Where:
Meet at the posted coordinates. There's a large tunnel under the road and that's where the photo/event will take place. You may park along the road above and walk down to the tunnel. It will more than likely be slippery and/or snowy so be careful and come prepared. Since it is in a gigantic tunnel, rain or snow will not affect the time/location.

What to bring:
Please post in your "will attend" log how many adults/kids (age of kids too) you plan on bringing so I may plan the photo assignments correctly.
Important: In order to log this event, everyone in your group will need to bring a flashlight of some kind. You will use your own flashlight for the picture. Anything will work but please don't have anything brighter than a Maglite...so no floodlights or bat-signals please!
Also, it'll no doubt be cold outside so wear appropriate clothing.

What will happen:
Once we have all our attendees, we will do a trial run of the photo so everyone can practice their part. Then, when all is ready, we'll take our shot. This will be about the 30" exposure if all goes well. Once the shot is made, the log book will be available for signing. We will also have refreshments to enjoy. You may stay around and visit in the cold also! (Do not worry if you are camera-shy...you're face will not be in the picture. Only the lights will show up. The background image of this page was taken with me directly in front of the camera and all you see is black.)

The Light Painting Photo
This event's light painting will be of the Geocaching logo. The tunnel is large enough to accomodate a logo about 30' tall. Ours will probably be about 12 feet instead so ladders will be involved. Further info about the painting will be provided as I get it prepared. For now, enjoy a fancy sketch!

The Results:
Tonight's event was a big success! It was all an experiment really and we hoped for it to go well but you all definitely surpassed expectations for sure. Thanks to all who came down to be "tunnel rats" and play with light. Here are the results of tonights teamwork:

The Logbook
And after that, how could we not do the logbook in the same fashion? Here are the shots taken with cachers writing their names in thin air! (We've already come up with a plan for next time to get these looking sharp)

Stay tuned...we do plan on doing more geocaching-related light painting events in the future! We already have in mind to do Signal the Frog and other scenes down the road.

A HUGE thanks to MarkandNancy for procuring the colored gels, KrazyKidz and gvsu4msu for loaning some ladders to the cause, and spartanalum for the use of his laptop to display the final result on location!!
