Pirâmides de Gizé, Guizé ou

Estas pirâmides ocupam a primeira posição na lista das sete maravilhas do mundo.
A grande diferença das Pirâmides de Gizé em relação às outras maravilhas do mundo é que elas ainda persistem, resistindo ao tempo e às intempéries da natureza, encontrando-se em relativo bom estado e, por este motivo, não necessitam de historiadores ou poetas para serem conhecidas já que podem ser vistas.
As pirâmides de Gizé estão localizadas na esplanada de Gizé, na antiga necrópole da cidade de Mênfis, e atualmente integra o Cairo, no Egito. Elas são as únicas das antigas maravilhas que sobreviveram ao tempo.
Estas três majestosas pirâmides foram construídas como tumbas reais para os reis Kufu (ou Quéops), Quéfren, e Menkaure (ou Miquerinos) - pai, filho e neto. A maior delas, com 160 m de altura (49 andares), é chamada Grande Pirâmide, e foi construída cerca de 2550 a.C. para Kufu, no auge do antigo reinado do Egito.
Foram necessários 30.000 trabalhadores por mais de 50 anos para construir a Grande Pirâmide. Foram usados mais de 2.000.000 de blocos de pedra, cada qual pesando em média duas toneladas e meia. Existem muitas idéias diferentes sobre o modo de construção daquela pirâmide. Muito provavelmente os pesados blocos eram colocados sobre trenós de madeira e arrastados sobre uma longa rampa. Enquanto a pirâmide ficava mais alta, a rampa ficava mais longa, para manter o nível de inclinação igual. Mas uma outra teoria é a de que uma rampa envolvia a pirâmide, como uma escada em espiral.
Os egípcios acreditavam que, enterrando seu rei numa pirâmide, ele se elevaria e se juntaria ao sol, tomando o seu lugar de direito com os deuses.
Um velho provérbio árabe ilustra isso: "O tempo ri para todas as coisas, mas as pirâmides riem do tempo".

The Giza Necropolis is an archaeological site on the
Giza Plateau, on the outskirts of
Cairo,
Egypt. This complex of ancient monuments includes the three
pyramid complexes known as the Great Pyramids, the massive sculpture known as the
Great Sphinx, several cemeteries, a workers' village and an industrial complex. It is located some 9 km (5 mi) inland into the
desert from the old town of
Giza on the
Nile, some 25 km (15 mi) southwest of Cairo city centre.
The pyramids, which have always loomed large as emblems of
ancient Egypt in the Western imagination, were popularized in
Hellenistic times, when the Great Pyramid was listed by
Antipater of Sidon as one of the
Seven Wonders of the World. Today it is the only one of the ancient Wonders still in existence.
The Great Pyramids consist of the
Great Pyramid of Giza (known as the Great Pyramid and the Pyramid of Cheops or Khufu), the somewhat smaller
Pyramid of Khafre (or Chephren) a few hundred meters to the south-west, and the relatively modest-sized
Pyramid of Menkaure (or Mykerinos) a few hundred meters further south-west. The
Great Sphinx lies on the east side of the complex.
The Pyramids of Giza and other were constructed to house the remains of the deceased
Pharaohs who ruled over
Ancient Egypt. A portion of the Pharaoh's spirit called his ka was believed to remain with his corpse. Proper care of the remains was necessary in order for the "former Pharaoh to perform his new duties as king of the dead." The pyramid not only served as a tomb for the Pharaoh but also as storage for the various items he would need in the afterlife. "The people of Ancient Egypt believed that death on Earth was the start of a journey to the next world. The embalmed body of the King was entombed underneath or within the pyramid to protect it and allow his transformation and ascension to the afterlife."
