At 12:51 PM on the 22 February, 2011, Christchurch suffered a devastating earthquake. Immediently after the earthquake, Hagley Park served as an initial welfare centre for those displaced from the Central Business District. On that first night after the quake, 250 people slept on boards in the temporary buildings which had been constructed for the Ellerslie International Flower Show. Due to the forcast of rain, The Hagley Park welfare centre closed on the 23rd and people were shifted by bus to the other welfare centres.
