Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the published coords.
To retrieve this cache you will need a compass. Most smart phones have a compass these days or a least a free app can be downloaded. Also many GPS units carry a compass in one variety or another. If you do not have access to either of these then the old fashioned hand held variety will work better than any of the above and is recommended.

You will be walking on Southwold common and golf course. Walkers do have the right of way but try to be respectful of other peoples recreation.

This story was first told many, many moons ago. To my knowledge the treasure remains unfound. The story goes something like this...

The famous nautical explorer Captain Birds Eye was tucking into a large plate of his succulent and tasty fish fingers on board his ship 'The Cache Hunter' when he heard a knock at his door. It was his trusted cabin boy Scarecrow Rog. In a state of panic, Scarecrow Rog told the captain how a pirate ship had been spotted on the horizon heading in their direction. It was the ship of the most notorious pirate ever to have roamed these waters, the formidable Captain Bassett and his motley crew of allsorts.

Upon hearing this grave news Captain Birds Eye reacted quickly, sending his most trusted crew member to hide the coordinates that would lead to a treasure map showing the hiding place of the Captains treasure. The crew member he sent was highly skilled in the art of hand to hand combat, he was feared among all men, towering above them all with his 7ft colossal frame. He was known throughout the land as Dave.

With the impending doom Dave leapt into the rowing boat and set a coarse for land. Apon casting off, Dave realised he had forgotten his oars. With no other way to reach the land, Dave had to wait for the tide to take him ashore. Once there Dave was attacked by the natives known to all as the Trekbuddies who will stop at nothing to find the treasure first. The battle that followed was bloody but Dave managed to hide the coords where he came ashore just before he was slain. The Trekbuddies were unable to find the coords and they are still hidden to this day. The sea battle that erupted between Captain Birds Eye and Captain Bassett lasted for weeks. No one knows who won, if anyone, and the story differs depending on who is telling it.

The only information I can give you as to the location of these coords is that 'The Cache Hunter' was at anchor during Captain Birds Eyes fish finger lunch. The cabin boy Scarecrow Rog recorded in his journal that he had taken a bearing of 230 degrees for Walberswick church tower. 000 degrees for the closest church at the edge of common and 310 degrees for a water tower shaped to look like a lighthouse. When the fearsome Dave entered the rowing boat, the tide was heading on a bearing of 240 degrees and travelling at a speed of 0.7km per hour. From the journal entry it is estimated that Dave was drifting for approximately 30 mins. The rest of it is over to you. Can you discover Captains Birds Eyes treasure before the Trekbuddies get their greedy mitts on it?

The sea depicted in this tale is one of make-believe and the only boat you will need to retrieve the cache is the one in your imagination. The characters in this story bear no resemblance to their real life name sakes. Mr Bassett is far more menacing in reality. The Trekbuddies really will stop at nothing to get an FTF. Dave and his trusted sidekick Dawn are in fact ninjas highly skilled in the art of deception and slight of hand and Captain Birds Eye does not get much opportunity to take 'The Cache Hunter' to sea. Instead he lays in waiting somewhere along the Norfolk broads, laying traps to lure the unsuspecting treasure seeker in.
