Geocache Description:

First there was An Unnecessary Cache and then came An InconSequential Cache. These were both puzzles and therefore required you to earn your smiley mentally. Now I bring you A Balanced Cache. No real mental work to do except to find your way out here, but you still earn your smiley.

While out walking to Sentry Box Mountain we came across a large boulder field in the middle of the forest. The first interesting feature I noticed was a large gum tree seemingly growing out of solid rock. I was moving around the back of this boulder pile when I was gobsmacked by the rock in the picture. It doesn't quite show it, but it is balanced on 3 points on much smaller rocks below, but believe me, it isn't going anywhere. There are plenty of other features in the area to explore and I wish I had had more time to do so myself.

This cache is along the route that several people have taken to the Sentry Box Mountain caches and is intended as a bonus smiley for those who make the effort. If you aren't continuing on I think this is well worth a visit in its own right.

To get here you can approach from the north or south, but the shortest route is from the south. Drive south from Tharwa a looong way and just after you pass the turn off to Mt. Clear Campground there is a road to the right that is signposted "Old Boboyan Road South" (waypoint provided) and drive until you reach the parking coordinates. From here it is 6.3km to Luton's Crutching Shed and it is recommended to go by bike to save time. Along the way you will turn off onto Sams River Fire Trail to the left followed by a quick right. From the shed the route is up to you. We followed the ridge for 1.6km through the bush, but you could conceivably cut that by heading up the fire trail a bit more and take a direct route the cache from there. The choice is yours.
