Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden on a lovely bit of secluded beach. It is reachable by a 4x4 fishing trail in Walker Bay Nature Reserve, (also known as 'Die Plaat'). You can also reach this cache by taking a 'stroll' from the lagoon on the Hermanus side. But that isnt how we got there... If you do decide to take the long way, leave early and take plenty food and water.

The 4x4 Fishing Trail is located in the Lê Bos section of Walker Bay. See map below. It begins at the reserve entrance next to Wortelgat, passing through the reserve to four different parking areas with beach access. We recommend using either the Groot Duifklip of Klein Duifklip parking area. Access to these trails entails an enterance fee, and a wild card only gets you a discount. However, if you have a 4x4 and don’t want to pay a fee, you can get pretty close by parking at Mierkom. The road there begins just before the gate house.

The reserve is open daily between 7am and 7pm. Visitors can enjoy a variety of day hikes along the coast. Angling, swimming and picnicking are permitted, but please note that the sea can be rough and dangerous. Fires and overnight camping are not allowed. No overnight accommodation is available in the Reserve.

Please avoid disturbing coastal birds and destroying sensitive dune vegetation. The African black oystercatcher is threatened by coastal recreational activities as it breeds on beaches during the summer. Please help protect and conserve the natural environment. Take care not to disturb coastal birds and stay clear of nesting sites. Use the boardwalks provided and avoid contact with sensitive dune vegetation. Litter must be removed and vehicles are to stay within demarcated areas.

Walker Bay is rich in Stone Age history, marine life, fauna and flora, so enjoy it and look after your environment. For more info, check out the Cape Nature site for Walker Bay, and the Fishing Trail.

Other rules from the Cape Nature Website:
  • Only 4x4 vehicles can access the trail (no 2x4 vehicles, motorcycles or quadbikes are allowed). Please check that your tyre pressure is correct.
  • It is strictly prohibited and illegal to drive on the beach, dunes or anywhere other than demarcated roads. Vehicles may park only in demarcated parking areas.
  • All users of this area are to strictly adhere to the regulations in terms of the Marine Living Resources Act (Act No. 18 of 1988) and Nature and Environmental Conservation Ordinance, 1974 (Ordinance 19 of 1974).
  • Please make sure you have all the necessary permits for angling and bait collection. These permits are available at post offices and must be produced at the request of an official.
  • No dogs are allowed.
  • No fires are allowed.
  • Gate times are strictly enforced. No-one is allowed in the reserve after 19h00 and overnight camping is illegal.
  • Drive slowly and look out for on-coming vehicles.
  • Please use the rubbish bags provided and make sure you leave with them.
  • The sea can be rough and dangerous at times. Small children must be supervised.

Happy Caching!
