~1/4 mile off the established trail to Amboy Crater. As you get closer to the cache, the terrain will become more difficult with loose, sharp rocks. Please wear sturdy boots (no sandals) and bring lots of water during summer months.
As you are driving down the entrance road to Amboy Crater, watch for some small craters on both sides. These craters were formed by collapse as the lava moved forward along the flow front. This cache is located on the Amboy lava flow composed of pahoehoe basalt and estimated to be ~6000 years old. As you are hiking to the location, you may notice rocks with more of a reddish color which can indicate the presence of a vent because the lava was oxidized during eruption. The cache is a small blue metal container. Be careful not to wander too far past the designated GPS coordinates because you will enter an active military bombing range.
