Castle Park Cricket Ground
The cricket ground was opened in 1908 and Essex began playing
first class cricket here in 1914. Today, it is the home of
Colchester and East Essex Cricket club and continues to play host
to Essex during the annual Colchester Cricket Festival.
Tree lined, it is a beautifully picturesque cricket ground on a
warm summers day. It has however suffered in the past with its
drainage. In 1966, the match between Essex and Derbyshire was
scheduled for Castle Park but there was no play for the first two
days as the River Colne had flooded the ground. The match was moved
on day 3 to the Garrison Ground and ended in a draw.
A world record was set here which has yet to be beaten. During a
county championship match between Essex and Kent in 1938,
Kent’s Arthur Fagg became the only batsman ever to hit a
double century in each innings, scoring 244 in his first and an
undefeated 202 in his second.
