The cache is slightly bigger than a 35mm film canister. Please leave its holder and just remove the cache container carefully, and log your find. Replace the container carefully into its holder.

Please be on the look out for bikers and cars on this road. It is a great road to burn some rubber and speed!

Protea caffra - Common Sugarbush

The Protea caffra (latin name) Family: Proteacae, common names: Common Sugar Bush (English); Gewone Suikerbos (Afrikaans); isiQalaba (Zulu, Xhosa), is a small tree which can be found in open or wooded grassland often on rocky ridges. It has a distinct flower, which can be solitary or in clusters of 3 or 4 in colours of pale red, pink or cream. Its leaves are leathery and hairless and the fruit is a thick hairy nut. The species is very variable and has several subspecies. The species name "caffra" is derived from 'Caffraria', the 17th century geographical name for the north eastern regions of South Africa. This species was first discovered in Natal, in around December/January 1839/40 by Ferdinand Krauss. Its main claim to fame is that it was illustrated on the reverse of the South African three penny coin - or 'tickey' - for almost 30 years. The bark has medicinal qualities.

It is interesting to note that the Protea caffra enjoys acidic soils (as well as other types of soils), especially that which is high in quartzite of which is in abundance in the Magaliesberg area.
