É difícil determinar a origem da vila de Almodôvar, a sua cultura e época. No entanto há registos de povos Árabes, Muçulmanos em mapas do século VII, em que a cidade era chamada de Al-Mudura que siginifica "coisa redonda ou cerca redonda".

It is difficult to tell the origin of the town of Almodôvar, a culture and a epoch. Nevertheless, there are registers of Arabic people, Muslims in maps of the VII century, in which the town was called Al-Mudura, which means the round thing or round fence.

É uma Vila pertencente ao distrito de Beja, situada entre a Serra do Caldeirão e a planície Alentejana, fica situada a 64 km de Beja, 74 km de Faro e 214 km de Lisboa.

It is a town belonging to the Beja district, situated between the Caldeirão mountain range and the Alentejanas plane, situated 64 km from Beja, 74 km from Faro and 214 km from Lisboa.

Almodôvar, terra de sapateiros entre os anos 1940 e 1970. Era a sul do país, a zona com mais indústria manual de calçado com cerca de 200 artesãos. Nessa altura difícil, formou-se o sindicato dos sapateiros que, embora, pouco democrático funcionava.

Almodôvar, land of shoe makers between the years 1940 and 1970. It was the town with more manual shoe makers of the south of the county with some 200 artisans. In these difficult times, the syndicate of shoe makers was formed, which in spite of being very little democratic, it worked.

Os industriais e oficinas trabalhavam com o intuito de participar nas feiras. Por todo o Alentejo os sapatos e as botas tinham fama, pois em todas as feiras havia uma rua com todos os sapateiros, a qual davam o nome de rua de Almodôvar.

The industrials and workshops worked with the objective of participating in fairs. In all of Alentejo the shoes and boots were famous, as in all fairs there was a street with all the shoe makers to which they gave the name of Almodôvar' s street.

Numa rotunda da vila, foi erigida uma impressionante escultura com 6 m de altura em homenagem à arte dos sapateiros desse tempo.

In a roundabout of the town, an impressive statue with 6 m high was erected in honour of the shoe makers of these times.
|

A obra em si, é do escultor Aureliano Aguiar. Feita com pedaços de ferro recuperado de todos os tipos.

The statue itself, is from the sculptor Aureliano Aguiar. Made with recovered pieces of metal of all kind of shapes.
