Geocache Description:

Traverse an area believed to be hunted by the Paleo-Indians over 12,000 years ago; you never know what you may see. This path is known to have many sightings of various mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. Trail surface is packed dirt with some areas of river rock; path is wide and well marked. There are some steep but short elevation changes where a biker may have to walk.

The first human activity that can be traced back to the Shenandoah River was the Paleo-Indians, almost 12,000 years ago. The primary evidence of Paleo-Indians in the Americas is stone tools, such as projectile points and scrapers that were used to hunt big game. The Paleo-Indians would travel constantly in order to find new herds of mastodons and caribou that were common in Virginia at the end of the Ice Age.

This cache is a regular sized clear lock-n-lock plastic container that has a log book and collector’s card.

Park in the Massanutten Shelter Parking Lot at the Cottonwood Trailhead. Start on Cottonwood trail then take a right onto Allen’s Mountain Trail. The cache is within the highest point in the park. Stay on the designated trails for your safety and do not try to shortcut this cache. There is private property and steep and dangerous ravines off the trails. With the exception of the cache, take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but foot prints. Round trip to this cache is approximately 3.4 miles so be sure to pack plenty of water.

This cache is part of the Virginia State Parks 75th Anniversary Geocaching Adventure. Each state park has a cache for this series, each with a unique collector’s card.
