Geocache Description:

The above coordinates is not for the Cache. This is part of a 1.1 mile walk that will take you along part of the Blackwater Rail Trail.

Inside this bonus cache is a disposable camera please do not take it but feel free to take a picture of your caching team/self or anything you fancy! Please log whether you take a photo and how many shutters are left on the camera

Placed with the kind permission of Essex County Council, the Blackwater Rail Trail follows the route of the disused Maldon to Witham railway line which closed in 1966. It is managed as a linear country park by Essex County Council. The trail can be joined at a number of points, but Heybride is probably the most convenient due to ease of access and the presence of nearby facilities. The trail starts by the entrance to Elms Farm Park off Heybridge Approach.

For this series, you will need your own log book to record the stamp, name and bonus number from each cache as you go along. All the containers are small, except for the Blackwater Rail Trail Bonus, that is a regular to trade items and trackables.

To make life easier, all the hints for the caches is on this page. From the given parking coordinates, follow the Blackwater Rail Trail in a north west direction.

The following 5 letterbox hybrids is along the path within 0.5 miles from the given parking. Take note that geocaches must be at least 0.1 mile apart.

Tom Thumb GC2BAEk- About 2 meters on the north east side of the footpath is a railing half covered under the trees above a ditch where water can flow through under the footpath. From here you can not see the railing on the other side of the path. Behind the railing is some trees, may be worth looking behind.

Big Boys GC2N88K - About 10 meters to the north east of the footpath is a glass greenhouse on private property. You will notice that the fence is very close to this greenhouse. The fencepost closest to the greenhouse is worth having a look in.

No 999 GC2BADJ - Where the footpath crosses a ditch, there is a railing on each side of the path. At one of these you will notice a large concrete post to the south of the railings. Here you will find a small container covered in leaves at the base of this post.

Thomas the Tank GC2BACS - Just to the north east of the footpath is a small concrete building (1m x 1m). Inside is not where you would like to look for a cache. On the opposite side of the path is a two trunk tree where you would rather look for a cache.

Jupiter GC2N8KY - Just over 5 meters on the south west side of the footpath you will notice a bobwire fence where 2 sleepers, 2 meters apart, are used as fence posts. To the left of the sleepers is a tree. The hint here is base of tree.

Blackwater Rail Trail Bonus GC2N8QM - N51 44.BDF E0 40.HBK - covered in large ivy covered multi trunk tree.

Letterboxing is said to have started in England in 1854 when a Dartmoor National Park guide, James Perrott, left a bottle by Cranmere Pool with his calling card in it and an invitation to those who found the bottle to add theirs. Eventually, visitors began leaving a self-addressed post card or note in the jar, hoping for them to be returned by mail by the next visitor (letterboxing). This practice ended in time and the current custom of using rubber stamps and log books came into use.

Rules

1) There is a stamp inside the letterbox container, it is not an item intended for trade. The stamp is meant to remain in the box so that visitors can use it to record their visit. Inside you’ll also find a log book, ink pad and pen.

2) Stamp the imprint of your personal stamp into the letterbox log book and write in your username and date.

3) Next, stamp the imprint of the letterbox stamp in your personal sketch book or log book. You might also add the name of the letterbox.

4) Once you’ve finished “stamping up,” be sure the stamp remain in the letterbox container itself and replace it as you would hope to find it.

5) Please restrict your trade items. The BONUS cache is a place to trade items & trackables.
