Partiendo de una simple ermita, desde 1511 este monumento ha ido creciendo, modificándose y restaurándose siglo tras siglo, hasta la majestuosa Basílica que podemos ver hoy en día.
Es agradable conocer el entorno y escuchar el maravilloso carillón de 24 campanas. Por supuesto, no podéis dejar de visitar su interior y contemplar la imagen de la Virgen de Begoña. En el año 1903, el Papa Pío X la declaró Patrona de Vizcaya. Desde entonces, ha sido y será nuestra querida “Amatxu de Begoña”.
Dos curiosidades:
* N 43º 16.161 W 2º 55.912 : Aquí está el Puente de La Salve. Llamado así porque era el lugar en el que los marineros que venían por la Ria del Nervión veían por primera vez la Basílica y le cantaban una salve a la Virgen.
* N 43º 15.460 W 2º 55.527 : Situado en el Bilbao antiguo. Marcado con una estrella en el suelo, este es el único lugar del Casco Viejo desde donde se puede ver la Basílica. Existe una imagen de la Virgen y una hucha para donativos.

From a small hermitage, since 1511 this monument has been growing, changing and restoring century after century, to the majestic Basilica the we can see nowadays.
It is very pleasant to know the surroundings and hear the wonderful carillon clock with its 24 bells. Of course, you must visit the interior, and contemplate the image of the Virgin of Begoña. In 1903, the pope Pio X declared her Patron of Vizcaya (Bizcay). Since then, she has been and she is our “Amatxu of Begoña”.
Two curiosities:
* N 43º 16.161 W 2º 55.912: Here you have the La Salve bridge. This was the place in which the Basilica was seen on the first time for the sailors that came from the sea along the River of Nervion.
* N 43º 15.460 W 2º 55.527: In the antique Bilbao. Marked with a star on the floor, this is the only place of the old side of the city in which you can see the Basilica. There is an image of the Virgin of Begoña and a moneybox for little donations.
