A series of 14 caches and a bonus placed in and around the parish of Cooling.
The caches vary in size from micros to large.
To get the bonus you must find all the caches to get the Bonus clues located on the back of the logbook. not all caches have a bonus clue.
The walk takes you on footpaths and roads, although these are mostly quiet country lanes, there are a couple of points you will be walking on a 'B-road', although this is not very busy it is the main road from cliffe to cooling, therefore I would recommend that it is not done by young children.
It can be muddy in places and very cold especially if there is a northerly wind blowing. Make sure you wrap up warm.
Cooling is a village on the Hoo Peninsula, looking over the North Kent Marshes and across to the Thames Estuary.
The village is very small, but does boast a castle, church (although redundant) and a pub (which does sell food).
Cooling castle was built in the 12th Century to defend the then port of Cliffe from french raiders. It was built on the edge of the marshes and at that time, the water at high tide would have been about 500m away. 800 years later the high tide mark is 3km from the castle.
The Church in cooling although now redundant is open to the public and is worth a look especially in the vestry which is lined with thousands of cockle shells. In the churchyard lie the graves of 13 babies. This is widely thought to be where Pip meets Magwitch in the opening lines of Charles Dickens's Great Expectations.
Walk Description:
From the church walk west along cooling road (towards cooling castle) until you reach a road on your left. Walk down this road. You pass Church Micro 80 – Cooling GC180TG
