Geocache Description:

Margarites is located 27 km East of Rethymno in the foothills of Mt. Psiloritis. Margarites is one of Crete’s pottery centers. Many craftsmen still use age-old traditional techniques and skills. You can watch them doing their work. This was the reason to create the cache here. Unfortunately in wintertime the production is stopped because the pottery processes are not fitting to the low temperatures. From the cache area there is a nice view down in the gorge and to the coast.

How to find Margarites? Driving on the Old Road there is a crossing west of Perama on waypoint N 35° 22.363 E 024° 41.000 with a signpost to Margarites. Follow this road up to Margarites and parking area N 35° 20.386 E 024° 41.289. Now you have the choice. 1. Going for a tour in the village and combine this with hunting the cache. 2. Drive directly to the cache area and park in the area of N 35° 20.026 E 024° 41.273. The cache is placed nearby and is similar a “drive in”.

In summertime the center of Margarites is crowded with a lot of tourists. The cache is located here little outside and hopefully you can go for the cache without being disturbed too much. The cache is a plastic container (in a plastic bag) with: Logbook, pencil, pencil sharpener, the Geocache Site and some items to trade. After logging please hide the cache well to avoid it for muggles. Before or after finding the cache you should take the opportunity to visit the village Margarites. Watch the craftsmen how they are still using age-old traditional techniques and skills, whether for small pieces of pottery or the large storage jars used on the island since the Minoan period, as evidences by the large jars found in all Minoan palaces. The craftsmen, each of whom has a particular specialization, supervise the entire production process from the right choice of clay, the sifting and moistening of the soil, the gradual formation of the large jars on the wheel, their decoration in typical patterns, and finally, their firing in special kilns.
On sunny days there is a very nice view downhill to the sea from the terrace at the restaurant beside the central place of Margarites on waypoint N 35° 20.408 E 024° 41.191 and go North of the monument “Igoumenos Arkadiou Gabriil 1820 – 1866. Another interesting place is Moni Margarites with the monastery yard and his small church with rich interior. A signpost to the monastery is to find on first parking area. A small ostrich farm is located behind the monastery and the cemetery.
