Geocache Description:

The view from the hills behind Maroulas over the olive grove up until the city of Rethymno is truly amazing. This was the reason to create the cache in this area. The cache is a traditional one, size small. Only the last 250 m are the reason for our underground classification 2.5, so wear good shoes. In the cache area there is a rock formation. From here you have a nice view to the Rethymno harbor and down in the gorge. To find the cache see spoiler.

How to find Maroulas?
Driving on the New Road take the exit to Platanias / Moni Arkadi. Turn right in Tsesmes on waypoint N 35° 22.008 E 024° 32.093. Follow this road up to waypoint N 35° 20.797 E 024° 32.677 with the signpost “Taverna Fantstico”.
Now you have the choice:
  • 1. First to park your car before Maroulas and do a tour in the village.
  • 2. Park the car here and walk to the cache in the direction of the “Taverna Fantastico”.
From the terrace there you will have on sunny days a brilliant view to the west to Rethymno and to the east to Panormo.

The cache is located about 650 m far from the restaurant. So as well in summertime with a lot of tourist you can go for the cache without being disturbed. Follow the street until you find to the shortest distance to the cache, then turn right off the road. You will find the rock formation were the cache is hidden. The cache is a plastic container (in a plastic bag) with: Logbook, pencil, pencil sharpener, the Geocache Site and some items to trade.

Before or after finding the cache you should take the opportunity to visit the fortified village Maroulas. The 800 years old village of Maroulas has preserved its traditional architecture, though Byzantine, Turkish and Venetian influences are apparent. You can find there an old olive press, a washing house, a nice church and some fountains. In the 1980’s, the village suffered great migration; the young people left for the cities leaving only the elderly behind. Nowadays Maroulas is coming back to life with its approximately 185 inhabitants and the restoration of many of the old buildings by Greeks but also foreigners who moved to the village permanently.
