A cache at the ruins of an old watermill on the NW edge of Faneromeni Lake near the tiny agricultural village of Laloumas.
The construction of Faneromeni Dam in 2005 has created a long and beautiful artificial lake that covers an area of approximately 100 acres and has a capacity of 20 million cubic meters.
The dam was constructed to meet the increased demand for irrigation of the Messara plain. In the few years of operation the lake of Faneromeni has become an extremely important wetland, a wildlife reserve, where many birds and animals nest.
The dam can be accessed through Vori village, near Phaestos. After Vori there is a waypoint to show you where to turn right to the dam. Then you continue driving along the lake until you reach the village of Laloumas. Many parts of the road are dirt road, usually in good condition but rather muddy after rains. There is also access through Zaros village in the east, a fairly good dirt road.
The tiny agricultural village of Laloumas has only 5 inhabitants and used to be dependency of the nearby village of Vorizia. Most of the village buildings are ruined and used as barns or stables.
The small river that passes-by is called Koutsoulidis and flows into the Faneromeni Lake.
The cache is placed at the ruins of a watermill hidden on its bank. We suggest you park at the village and walk to the cache. There is a nice old bridge to cross in order to get there.
The cache is a preformed bottle. It contains only the logbook so bring your own pen! Please, hide it well again!
