Beach Boys Series #3 Shut Down Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

grateful cacher: This cache has a history of being muggled in it's short life, and I was going to retire it last month. But I saw that it was given the honor of being included on the Portland Cache Machine II route. So I reactivated it just for that event. But that has gone by, so it is time for this one to come home. If anyone still needs to log it from that event, just make a note of it in your log. Thanks to all who have hunted for it in the past, but it was a known target for the neighborhood kids.

Geocache Description:

Over the past year, I've done a series of geocaches that were dedicated to one of my favorite rock bands, the Grateful Dead (or should I say "dead-icated"?). But the Dead aren't strictly the only group that I listen to with any regularity. I've been a fan of the Beach Boys since the early '60's. So I thought, why not a series for that group as well. Now they played Portland quite a few times, but only in a couple of places (and those sites already have Grateful Dead caches). So this series won't be for where they played, but for locations that are tied to some of the songs that they wrote and sang.

The title of this cache is "Shut Down", one of the Beach Boys most popular car songs. The song details a drag race between a Super-Stock 413 cu. in.-powered 1962 Dodge Dart and a fuel injected 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. It was written by Brian Wilson and Roger Christian. It was released on two Beach Boy albums in 1963, "Surfin' USA" and "Little Deuce Coupe". It was also the flip-side of their 45rpm single "Surfin' USA", and made it to #23 in US charts. (You remember flip-sides don't you? That was when there were only two songs on a record, an A-side and a B-side. You DO remember records, don't you? Those vinyl things that were around before CDs were developed.)

The inspiration for this cache is for a good friend of ours who has come to our automotive rescue too many times to count. One of his hobbies is that he likes to build cars - hot rods, show machines, and maybe even a motorcycle or two. I've seen some of his creations and they are wonderful. His cars would definitely "shut down" any competion that they would face.

This cache is located in a place that geocachers are familiar with, and the container is one that is familiar as well. It is not necessary to go onto any business property to get it. The owner of the business it is adjacent to is aware that the cache is here. There is ample on-street parking but be careful as this is a busy street so take care and watch out for traffic. Also don't block any driveways or business access, and do not park in the the adjacent business' parking lot. Cache is available 24/7, but after dark be advised the adjacent owner does have a watchdog that is on the property.

Congratulations to mckeefamily8 and AD A M B for the shared FTF. Now "tach it up, tach it up....."
