Cherry Blossom CITO

Saturday, March 19th

10 a.m. to 1:pm

On Saturday, March 19th, 2011 we will be cleaning up Hains Point in preparation for the 2011 National Cherry Blossom Festival!

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is an annual two-week event that celebrates springtime in Washington, DC as well as the 1912 gift of the cherry blossom trees and the enduring friendship between the people of the United States and Japan.

Working with the National Park Service, we will be picking up river debris on Hains Point. Hains Point is within the jurisdiction of the National Mall and Memorial Parks unit of the National Park Service. Washington's famous cherry trees extend well into Hains Point. Hains Point is located at the southern tip of East Potomac Park, between the main branch of the Potomac River and the Washington Channel in southwest Washington, D.C. The land on which the park is located is sometimes described as a peninsula, but is actually an island: the Washington Channel connects with the Tidal Basin north of the park and the Jefferson Memorial. The island is artificial: it was built up from Potomac dredging material from 1880 to 1892.

Check In & Parking: We will meet at the parking lot.

What to Bring

Sturdy shoes that can get muddy (maybe bring an extra pair)
Extra clothes in case you get muddy
Heavy-Duty Work Gloves
Trash grabbers/Litter Sticks: Something with pointy tips is very handy to get trash out of icky places.
First Aid: consider bug bites, allergic reactions, sunburns, cuts, etc.
Drinking water is essential.
Snacks (maybe we can set up a lunch meet-up in DC?)
Camera, if possible. Take lots of pictures!
Boxes of Wet Wipes to help with clean up after the event

PARTICIPANTS (Per NPS requirements) This CITO event is limited to the first 50 logged participants. Please log will attend responsibly. The participants will need to be at least 13 years of age or older for safety as we will be working near water. Children should have an adult working with them. Participants under the age of 18, will need to complete the volunteer agreement form (Page1,Page 2) and bring the form with them to the event. Rain or Shine: Due to the preparation work involved, the National Park Service operates under a rain or shine policy.
