The cache is situated in a small nature reserve with permission from the Stroud Community Land Trust.
Parking can be found at N51° 44.510 W002° 14.350 with a short walk to the cache past an updated section of canal.
This five acre site contains tranquil woodland, wild plants, an abundance of birdlife and insects as well as a lake which dates back to the 12th century. Records show that the lake was once used as a mill pond for Canalside Mill. This was the lowest of five on the Ruscombe Brook and it was still working as a corn mill in 1882.
Sadly this is all that remains of a nine bedroom Victorian mansion called 'The Lawns' and it once formed the kitchen garden and part of the more formal grounds.
The property was eventually purchased by the council and demolished in the 1960s to make way for the Cainscross Roundabout and the now deserted Tricorn House office complex. This was once voted the ugliest building in Gloucestershire and is even uglier now !
The restoration work by volunteers is ongoing, but is well on the way to achieving the goal of bringing one of the last remaining green spaces in Cainscross back to its former glory as a special place for local people and wildlife. The lake has been dredged and two small back ponds, along with wetlands, created for wildlife.
The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast.
