A evolução das cidades é, em regra, feita em ondas sucessivas de desenvolvimento. Existem naturalmente excepções, de cidades que foram planeadas na sua totalidade antes de iniciada a sua construção. No entanto, a forma mais habitual de desenvolvimento é a cíclica extensão da cidade pelos terrenos que lhe estão adjacentes a partir de um núcleo central. Naturalmente que esta evolução não é regular e muitas vezes nem sequer planeada. É frequente ver a cidade a contornar ou ser “parada” por acidentes geográficos mais significativos. Com este tipo de evolução, surgem então as pequenas “ilhas” rodeadas de cidade a toda a volta enquanto não são engolidas pela urbanização e aproveitamento dos espaços.

The evolution of cities is generally done in successive waves of development. There are of course exceptions of cities that were planned in its entirety before its start construction. However, the most common development path is, from a central core, cyclic extension of the city for the land adjacent to it. This type of evolution is not regular and often not even planned. We often see the city going around or being "stopped" by the significant geographical features. With this development pattern it is common the creation of "islands" of country fields surrounded by city, that have not yet been swallowed by the voracious urbanizing drive.
