How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

This is the fifth in the series of Techno Events and the first for the year. The four we held in 2010 were very successful and those who attended learned a lot and have applied it. There are many new (and some not so new) geocachers out there who don’t know the tools and resources available to them. This is a chance to get together to meet other cachers and harness the available technology to make your geocaching a more enjoyable pastime. The venue has limited seating (20) for those who want to come and join us between 13:00 and 17:00 to see the technology in action as well as to hear what the seasoned geocachers have to say about their experiences. So, whether you are a geocacher with 1 or 1000+ cache finds to your name come along and share what technology has to offer. The old hands will be available to give individual customised tutoring if that is what you require. There should be someone available who will be able to help you solve your questions. There will still be group lectures especially on GSAK, mystery / puzzle solving, how to go about planting your first cache…. It is up to you to drive this. So if there is a specific topic that you would like covered feel free to suggest it on the forum or send me a mail directly. Keep an eye out, therefore on the forum for updates and discussions as to what additional topics are going to be covered.

If you would like to join us for this session, please post your attendance early as seating is on a "first come first served" basis. However, should you want to come just to meet up with everybody and renew caching friendships, discover some new coins or just enjoy a sundowner, braai fires will be available from 17:00 onwards. Please bring along your own "dop & chop".

If you are attending the first session and you have a laptop / Macbook that you can bring along, there is a WiFi as well as wired network to enable you to connect to the internet to download pocket queries, update your profile or just experiment with your newfound skills and knowledge. Refreshments will also be provided during the breaks throughout the afternoon.

When logging your intended attendance, please indicate whether you will be coming to the "byte", "bite" or both. This will help us with the necessary logistical arrangements.

The full program for the afternoon will be published in due course once I know who is coming and whom I can secure to take a particular topic, but will in all likelihood cover GSAK, the latest changes and features available under geocaching.com to ordinary and premium members, planning caching routes with Google earth vs Mapsource, and the basics of cache planting.

13:00 Welcome, settle in and get online.

13:15 - 14:15 First lecture session. Anton (Damhuisclan) will be taking us on a lightning tour of GSAK, what the latest features include and how to harness the power of the tools at hand. He will deal with the topic of macros, what they have to offer and how to install them. If you have specific aspects that you would like covered or you feel other people would benefit from, you are welcome to send him a PM and suggest it. I am sure he would be pleased to give specific emphasis on those aspects with which people struggle the most. If time allows, Anton will also tackle those elusive puzzles and what to do after you have solved them so that GSAK will remember the solution to the final coordinates.

14:15 - 14:30 Refreshments will be available and if I can fit it in some baking, some pastries fresh out the oven.

14:30 - 15:30
Tutorial: This is where you actually get to try out what you have learned. I am hoping that there will be a sufficient mix of people to afford those that need it, personalised one-on-one coaching. So especially if you are a whiz at GSAK or have mastered your particular brand of GPS, I need you to come along to the event not only to enjoy the social but to be prepared to help out those you may still not have grasped all the finer points of this marvellous technology.

15:30 - 15:45 More refreshments, smoke break and munchies.

15:45 - 16:30 The second lecture session will be mainly devoted to geocaching etiquette. Pine from RedGlobe will take us through some of the dos and don'ts of planting caches especially in line with the thread on the forum in which Andy (Fish Eagle) takes issue with some of the new caches being planted at the moment. For newbies and oldies alike, there are certain rules which are being flaunted that can give geocaching a bad name. You may be unaware of these rules or just need a gentle reminder. It is always good to note of some of the basics from time to time.

16:30 - 17:00 This will be a general Q & A session as well as giving Hendri (Team_vdlo) an opportunity to discuss the planned earthcaching day event that he is already in the throws of organising for some time mid year.

17:00 till whenever... Braai, socialising, swapping coins, discovering new coins.... helping move some 2011 TB racers along while having a great time enjoying yourselves to the full. There will be a limited amount of geocaching hardware available if you are looking to acquire one of those elusive nanos to hide somewhere.
Please bring along whatever you want to eat and drink.
