Geocache Description:

2011 Post Ice-fishing Season Lake Clean-up

After all the Ice Shelters have been removed from the lakes, there always is a collection of debris left behind. If this trash remains on the ice and enters the lake after ice-out, it will have a negative effect on the lake’s environment. To prevent this trash from falling to the bottom of the lake, we would like everyone to join in on a CITO effort to go out and remove anything remaining on the ice after the Ice Shelters are removed for the season.

 Here is the plan:
  • Event day: Saturday, March 5, 2011
  • Location: Lakeside Park, Forest Lake, MN
  • Time: 10am to 1pm
  • Who: Geocachers, Local Scout Troops and Packs, Area Residents, and any others interested in helping out.


Schedule:
  • 10am: Kickoff speech by a representative from the Area Water Conservation District.
  • 10:05 am: Hand out bags and head out on the lake to pick up trash and return it to the park dumpsters.
  • 12 noon: Everyone return from the lake for a pot-luck lunch at the picnic shelter.
  • 12:30 pm: Group Photo near the trash collected.
  • 1 pm: CITO Event all done. Thanks and we’ll see you all next year.




We will be having representatives from a search and rescue unit on hand to speak with participants.

Visits by additional public safety personnel will be added to the event. Please check the event page for updates throughout the winter.

We also will be working with the DNR to provide information as to where they have identified areas that are in particular need of attention. If GPS coordinates can be provided, they will be added to the event page as waypoints after March 1, 2010.

According to the Water Conservation District representatives, typical trash items that are left out on the ice are: Pieces of carpet, wood, cans, and bottles (broken and intact). They suggested people bring something along to chop things loose from the ice and safety glasses for those doing the chopping. Since it’s still going to be winter and attendees would normally be wearing gloves, we will not have any available. Depending on ice conditions, wearing crampons might also be a good idea to assist in walking or pulling trash to the landing. Inexpensive crampons can be purchased at most sporting goods or bait stores.

It would be very helpful if anyone who owns ATV’s or snowmobiles could bring them to the event to pull debris from the ice. Please be reminded not to allow passengers on these vehicles, trash being removed, or any trailers. Come on out and help keep our area lakes clean.

Note for Scouting Units:

Participation will qualify for “Good Turn for America” service hours.

This CITO event is being held simultaneously with another CITO event. Please choose only one to attend and help out with the Lake Cleanup. This was one of SJ's requests when the idea for two events on the same day was presented to him. I'm sure MN.Fruitcake will concur.
