Opoho Onion (Dunedin, Otago) Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

daywalk: Sadly, it's time for this onion to be thrown out in the compost heap...

The hide area was perfect for a unique and tricky hide - and it's not a place that could be damaged by the vigorous searching that went on - but it wouldn't be nearly so much fun changing to a less difficult hide.

If anyone does wonder where the Onion was, just email us and we'll tell you [:)]

Geocache Description:

Fancy yourself as a cook? We've got an Opoho Onion which needs to be peeled and sliced...

Everyone knows that onions can make you cry!
There are lots of methods to avoid tears, some sensible and some quite odd - for example, see the wikihow list below.

Which method works best?

The kitchen area is likely to be a bit slippery and muddy, with some brambles in places (although you shouldn't need to go there). Approved OSH footwear (such as freezing workers' white gumboots?) might come in handy during your food preparation. It may also be advisable to wear gardening gloves- a lot of hidden rubbish has been unearthed during the searching, and some glass slivers and metal shards have been spotted.

Here's the recipe:

Only 19 letters, sorry.
All the ingredients are real words, and many (but not all) were harvested from geocaching.
The two words indicated by hyphens are verbal phrases instead of single words.

The vegetable cupboard is located at:

You can check the pantry location at Geochecker.com. Reception is a little dodgy, but the information given above will help you limit your search radius.

Please leave the kitchen exactly as you found it. And if you can't stand the heat... then you'll never find the cutlery drawer...

How to Chop Onions Without Tears

Use a Sharp Knife

• Use a very sharp knife when cutting onions. The enzymes are released when cells are broken or crushed; using a sharp knife slices through the onion rather than crushing and thus, fewer enzymes are released.

Chill the Onions

• Chill your onions in the freezer before cutting them. This reduces the amount of the acid enzyme released into the air.

Don't get the gas in your eyes

• Wear gas-tight goggles or a mask.
• Cut the onion next to a strong draft from a fume hood or fan so that the gas is pulled away from your eyes; or
• Wear contact lenses (easy enough if you wear them anyway) - they create a barrier between the surface of your eyes and the gas.

Absorb the gas in water

• Cut the onion under water.
• Cut the onion near running water or a cloud of steam (from a kettle or pan of water)
• Breathe through your mouth (to draw the gas over your wet tongue) or stick your tongue out.

Breathe Through Your Mouth

• Breathe through your mouth only. The olfactory nerves which are closely located to the tear duct nerves will be bypassed, and there will be no tears generated. This is easily confirmed when you forget and breathe through your nose. Instant tears.

Slow or stop the reaction that makes the gas

• Put vinegar on the chopping board (the acid denatures the enzyme);
• Soak the onion in water (the enzyme is denatured by the water-air boundary); or
• Soak the onion in salt water (the ionic solution denatures the enzyme).

The Candle Method

• Light a candle and set it near the cutting board before cutting the onion. The gas released by the onion is drawn into the flame of a candle.

Onions are Tubular

• Because onion "flesh" is tubular in construction - like thousands of tiny tubes side by side, pointing toward the top and bottom of the onion - pointing the tubes away from you while cutting will keep the onion from spraying in your eyes. Of course, a breeze of any kind can send the fine, misty spray toward your eyes, so pay attention to air currents too.

Chewing

• Chew bread or gum. Many people report that chewing, especially gum, helps avoid tears when cutting onions.
