Geocache Description:

An easy cache that forms part of the Shipwreck Series. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link. This cache is in the grounds of the museum.

The museum is housed in a historical building in the centre of town. It is a truly fascinating tribute to the tragic history of the Agulhas coastline and well worth a visit. The theme is "Shipwrecks along the dangerous Southern Cape coast and their influence on the development of the Strandveld". The bulk of the exhibits are the artefacts and remains from four of the area's biggest wrecks, notably the Arniston, the Birkenhead, the Queen of the Thames and the Oriental Pioneer. Another exhibit is a series of scale models demonstrating the death throes of a ship until its final disintegration, when it is buried by sand.

The local coastline – sometimes rocky with hidden reefs, sometimes sandy shallows – has become known as “The Graveyard of Ships”. More than 130 shipwrecks have been recorded between Danger Point near Gansbaai in the northwest and Witsand at the mouth of the Breede River to the east.

The museum is also home to a wooden figurehead, which was originally washed up on the rocks below Cape Agulhas Lighthouse. A replica of the figurehead stands outside the lighthouse.
