Geocache Description:

Easy cache that forms part of the Shipwreck Series. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link. These wrecks all take place around Cape Hangklip but most of the water's edge is now private property so this is as close as I could get.

LSTV stands for three of the many wrecks that occurred in this area but the exact location of these wrecks is unknown.

The Louise Scheller was a German barque of 408 tons, commanded by Capt H. Klocking. Wrecked at Cape Hangklip on 6 June 1882 during a north-west gale after putting into Simon's Bay to restow her cargo while on a voyage from New York to Singapore with a cargo of paraffin oil. The lower tier having leaked out, it was decided to restow at Table Bay. No lives were lost.

The Ternate was a very early Dutch East Indiaman that went aground on 07 January 1680. Each East Indiaman carried a physician, a surgeon, and a mate who served as the barber. The surgeon on the Ternate was Christopher Fryke who sailed on the Ternate. He gives interesting details of the discipline on board the Ternate. Punishments were cruel and typical for that era. Keel-hauling, running the gauntlet and nailing the offender's hand to the mast with a knife until he chose to pull it away were some of them. Fryke was one of only 43 out of a crew of 343 who survived the wreck.

The Verona was a Norwegian bargue of 700 tons. Abandoned off Cape Hangklip in a sinking condition and driven ashore on 14 August 1902 during a north-west gale while on a voyage from Glasgow to Table Bay with a cargo of coal.
