Geocache Description:

A quick cache and dash at a railway station (Polsloe Bridge) on the Avocet Line, which is the railway line running between Exeter St Davids and Exmouth

About SideTracked

We have Motorway Mayhem. We have A-Road Anarchy (cos there aren’t many Motorways in Wales!). But what about public transport users? SideTracked Caches are intended to provide quick Cache-and-dashes at Train Stations.

It is hoped this idea will spread across the country in the same way as the MMs….but if hiding one PLEASE BE SENSIBLE and remember that in this day and age, public transport is under greater scrutiny than ever before, so, although these caches should be quick and easy grabs, PLEASE don’t place a Cache where it could cause alarm!!!

History From Wikipedia

The station was opened in 1907 to serve the eastern suburbs of Exeter. It was situated just a short distance along the branch and was convenient for Exmouth Junction engine shed which was on the opposite side of the main line.

The platforms were rebuilt in 1927 using concrete components cast at the concrete workshop that had been established at Exmouth Junction. On 4 February 1973 the branch was singled and the down platform taken out of use.

Private goods sidings were provided on the west side of the line on both sides of the station. Between the platform and the junction was a siding to a brickworks, while a little to the south was Newcourt, a military depot.

It has one platform currently in use – on the right of trains arriving from Exeter – situated on an embankment above Pinhoe Road. The only access to the station is via a number of steps. The former second platform and its stairwell to street level remains opposite the platform in use, albeit very overgrown and derilect.

The station serves the Polsloe, Mount Pleasant, Hamlin and Whipton areas of the city.

Interestingly, this station has no ticket machine.

About half the trains on the Avocet Line from Exmouth to Exeter St Davids call at Polsloe Bridge. Beyond St Davids they generally continue to either Paignton or Barnstaple. Connections are available at Exeter Central for Pinhoe and stations to Waterloo; passengers for other main line stations change at Exeter St Davids.

You are looking for a Nano cache here due to the very high level of muggle activity with passengers using the station and also the very busy road junction and the footpath to the nearby park.

I would have liked to have placed a bigger cache however due to the the local children who live in the area the cache would be highly unlikely to survive.

As you come out of the station entrance you will need to turn left and walk along the pavement and onto the cycle/footpath near the park.

Wheelchair users will now need help to retrieve the cache. Please replace as found

Please bring a pen to sign the log.
