The caves of Sao Vicente were formed by a volcanic eruption 890 thousand years ago at Paúl da Serra. As the lava came down to the sea, the outer portion was exposed to lower temperatures and solidified rapidly, while inside, the lava continued to flow with many gases and created a series of lava tubes that form the caves of Sao Vicente, which one can walk through. This set of eight “volcanic tunnels” extends for a distance of more than 1000 metres, with maximum heights varying between 5 and 6 metres. It is the largest known cave system on Madeira Island.
The volcanic activity has been extinct for millennia, but the last period of eruptions, in which the fused lava reached a temperature of 1200oC, left marks that can be seen along the nearly 700 metres of subterranean trails that were excavated to gain access to the various tubes or natural channels that make up the 1000 metres of caverns. This excavated trail drops a maximum of about 19 metres in relation to the entrance.
The caves were first reported in 1885 by the local population, whose curiosity was awakened by the cave opening. Amazed by what they found, the news of the discovery spread very quickly, and Englishman James Yates Johnson carried out a study and drew up an integrated project for its use.
These caves were inaugurated on 1 October 1996, being the first volcanically-born caves opened to the public in Portugal.

As grutas de Sao Vicente formaram-se a partir de uma erupçao vulcânica há 890 mil anos atrás, no Paul da Serra, que veio descendo até o mar, a parte exterior ficou exposta a temperaturas mais baixas que solidificou rapidamente, enquanto que por dentro a lava continuava a correr com muitos gases, formando assim uma série de tubos de lava, que constituem as grutas de Sao Vicente, onde é possível caminhar sobre eles. Este conjunto de oito "túneis vulcânicos" apresenta um desenvolvimento total de mai s de 1000 metros de comprimento, cuja altura máxima varia ente 5 a 6 metros, e é o maior que se conhece, até agora, na Ilha da Madeira.
As marcas deixadas pela actividade vulcânica do último período eruptivo extinta há milénios, onde a lava em fusao atingia a temperatura de 1200oC, podem ser constatadas ao longo de aproximadamente 700 metros de percurso subterrâneo que resultou da escavaçao, para dar acesso aos vários tubos ou canais naturais que constituem os 1000 metros. Esta escavaçao ocasionou um desnível máximo de cerca de 19 metros em relaçao a entrada.
Divulgadas pela primeira vez em 1885, pela populaçao local, cuja curiosidade foi despertada através da sua abertura. Maravilhados com o que encontraram, rapidamente espalharam a sua descoberta e mereceram um estudo pelo ingles James Yates Jonhson e a elaboraçao de um projecto integrado para o seu aproveitamento.
Inauguradas a 1 de Outubro de 1996, sao as primeiras grutas de génese vulcânica abertas ao público em Portugal.
