Kalosjen - IHINE #2 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

Geocaches which have not been maintained or the owner has not responded will not be taken out of the archive

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,

About the IHINE caches
This cache is part of the IHINE series (Industrial History In Nedre Eiker). Nedre Eiker has a long tradition as an industrial municipality, and did in the 1950s have the highest percentage of industrial workers in the country. The IHINE caches will take you on a guidet tour through the remains of the most noteworthy of these old industry sites. NB: Each of the IHINE caches has a digit written on the lid of the box! These digits sum up to the position of a coming bonus cache, so make sure you record these numbers for later!

About Kalosjen:
"Den norske Galoge- og Gummivarefabrik" ("The Norwegian Galosh and Rubber Factory") was established on the 22nd of November 1897. From 1952 forth the factory has changed name several times, through "Mjøndalen gummivarefabrik", "Viking-Mjøndalen", "Trelleborg Viking" up to today's "Trelleborg Offshore". In common tongue, however, the factory has always been known as "Kalosjen" ("the galosh"). Even the road that leads to the factory and the cache is called "Kalosjegata". Even though the factory has been located in Krokstadelva (north of the river), the name "Mjøndalen" (south of the river) was used due to the fact that the railway station is there.

As the name suggests, the factory started up making galoshes, but the product range has since expanded and adjusted to the demands of time. This goes a long way to explain how the factory is still going strong, after more than 110 years in the business. Among the variety of products that has been made through the years, we find rubber bands (for glass jars and milk bottles), heating bottles, rubber tracks for tracked vehicles and rubber boots. Yours truly has logged quite a few hours in "Viking" rubber boots himself, bought at the factory outlet now long gone.

"Kalosjen" has been a major employer in the community since the beginning. In 1905, 150 people were employed here, and both father and grandfather of the cache owner have worked here at one point. The hourly wage in 1905 was 10 øre (roughly 1,2 euro cents) and work hours were from 6 am to 6 pm on weekdays (2 pm on Saturdays).
