Penedo Gordo é uma aldeia do Baixo Alentejo, com várias centenas de
habitantes, situada a 5 km (quilómetros) de Beja, próxima da famosa
Fonte das Cavadas.
Foi uma região povoada pelos romanos, na qual ainda podemos
encontrar os seus vestígios: as Ruínas de Pisões e os Arcos
Romanos.
Penedo Gordo é um meio rural mas com características de bairro
urbano. As casas são do tipo rural alentejano.

Lenda da Fonte das Cavadas
Há muitos anos que a Fonte das Cavadas tem dado de beber aos
habitantes do Penedo Gordo e a todos os que por ali passam.
Foi mandada construir por Luís Filipe Fernandes em 1876 e conta
a história a seguinte lenda:
Há muitos, muitos anos atrás, havia naqueles terrenos um touro e
uma serpente que procuravam delimitar o seu terreno para se
sustentarem.
A serpente, vivia no ribeiro alimentada por um fio de água que
não se sabia de onde vinha. O touro, vivia com a manada nas ricas
pastagens.
Conta a lenda que um dia os dois animais travaram entre si uma
forte discussão.
O touro zangado, erguendo as patas de frente dizia:
_ Oh serpente, tu não podes continuar a roubar a água que me
mantém as pastagens verdes!
E a serpente, tão zangada como o touro respondia:
_ E tu touro, não me podes continuar a roubar a água por onde eu
anda!
Conta a lenda que nesse momento os dois animais começaram a
lutar. A serpente tentou enrolar-se em volta do corpo do touro para
o matar e o touro levantava as patas da frente para a esmagar.
De repente, apareceu uma fada e disse:
_"Vós que lutais por causa da água, vou-vos transformar em
fonte! Tu touro, transformar-te-ás na bica mais fina que correrá
para sempre. No Inverno, a água será quente e no Verão fresca.
Ficareis sempre separados e sempre misturados e rompereis uma
ribeira "Cavadas" que matará a sede dos campos e dos que por aqui
passarem."

Penedo Gordo is a village in the Alentejo, with several hundred
inhabitants, located 5 km (miles) from Beja, near the famous
Fountain of the Dug.
It was a region populated by the Romans, in which we can still
find its traces: the Ruins of Pisões Arcos and Romans.
Penedo Gordo is a rural environment but with characteristics of
urban neighborhood. The houses are of the rural Alentejo
region.

Legend of the Fountain of the Dug
For many years the source of drinking Dug has given to the
inhabitants of Penedo Gordo and all who pass by.
It was built by Louis Philippe Fernandes in 1876 and tells the
story the following legend:
There are many, many years ago, there were those land a bull and
a serpent that sought to demarcate their land to support
themselves.
The snake lived in the stream fed by a trickle of water that no
one knew whence he came. The bull, lived with the herd in the rich
pastures.
Legend has it that one day the two animals fought among
themselves a strong argument.
The bull angry, raising his front paws said:
_ Oh Snake, you can not continue to steal the water that keeps
me the greener pastures!
And the serpent, as angry as a bull replied:
_ And thou bull, I can not continue to steal the water where I
walk!
Legend has it that this time the two animals began fighting. The
snake tried to wrap around the body to kill the bull and the bull
lifted his front paws to crush.
Suddenly, a fairy appeared and said:
_ "You who struggle because of the water, you'll turn into a
source! You sire, thou shalt turn in lines finer than run forever.
In winter, water will be hot and cool in summer.
You shall be separated forever and always mix and break up a
creek "Dug" that kills the thirst of the fields and that pass
through here. "
