Mitten auf der achten Etappe des Westerwaldsteiges, trifft man auf ein interessantes Natur-Phänomen - die Wolfsteine.
Das Naturdenkmal Großer Wolfstein ist ein sagenumwobener alter Grenzpunkt, der schon 1048 von der Kirche in Haiger als Markierung für die Herrschaft zum Westerwald urkundlich genannt wird. Damals allerdings hieß der Wolfstein noch Drutgerestein, was auf germanische (Drutgere = Gertrude = Speerfreundin) oder keltische Wurzeln (Drutgere = Druide) schließen lässt. Den historischen Grenzverlauf markieren heute noch Grenzsteine aus 1788 mit den Buchstaben ON für Oranien-Nassau und SH für Sayn-Hachenburg.
Der Große Wolfstein ist der Überrest eines Lavastromes. Die Sage erzählt: Der Teufel wollte einen Turm bauen, der bis in den Himmel reichen sollte. Er sammelte eine Menge mächtiger Basaltblöcke, die überall in den Wäldern lagen. Der Teufel band die Basaltbrocken zusammen und fuhr mit dieser Last durch die Lüfte. Aber die Vertauung riss, und die Steine fielen zu früh auf die Erde. Und da liegen sie heute noch. So soll der Große Wolfstein entstanden sein.
Der Wolfstein besteht aus Basaltgestein.
Basalt ist ein basisches (SiO2-armes) Ergussgestein. Es besteht vor allem aus einer Mischung von Eisen- und Magnesium-Silikaten mit Olivin und Pyroxen sowie calciumreichem Feldspat (Plagioklas).
Insgesamt erweisen sich Basalte von ihrer chemischen Zusammensetzung her als ausgesprochen variable Gesteine, was im Widerspruch zu ihrem recht einheitlichen Aussehen steht. Je nach Entstehungszone (siehe nachfolgenden Abschnitt) kann die Mineralzusammensetzung stark schwanken.
Nach dem Besuch vor Ort könnt ihr den Cache loggen. Weiterhin müsst ihr mir noch eine Email mit den Antworten auf die drei unten stehenden Fragen schicken. Ein Foto von Euch oder Eurem GPS-Gerät vor den Wolfssteinen, auf dem man das Gesicht im vor dem Stein befindlichen Baum erkennen kann, wäre auch sehr schön.

During the eighth part of the Westerwald-Steig, you will encounter an interesting phenomenon of nature - The Wolfsstein.
The natural monument is a legendary old limiting point, that was already mentioned by the church of Haiger in 1048. At that time, the Wolfstein was called Drutgerestein, a sign for the germanic or celtic orgin of this place.
The (big) Wolfstein ist the end of a lavastream.
The legend about this place talks about the devil who wanted to built a very high tower that reached to the sky. He collected a lot of huge massive basalt-stones, that lied around in the woods.
The devil fixed this stones and lifed himself up in the air, when the rope was torn in pieces. The stones fall back on the ground and stayed on the surface. This is how the Wolfstein arose.
The wolfstein consist of basalt.
The mineralogy of basalt is characterized by a preponderance of calcic plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene. Olivine can also be a significant constituent. Accessory minerals present in relatively minor amounts include iron oxides and iron-titanium oxides, such as magnetite, ulvospinel, and ilmenite.
Basalt has high liquidus and solidus temperatures—values at the Earth's surface are near or above 1200 °C (liquidus) and near or below 1000 °C (solidus); these values are higher than those of other common igneous rocks.
To log this cache, you have to take a photo of yourself (or your GPS-device) with the face on the tree, standing in front of the wolfstone.
