Antiche monete italiane: il Fiorino
Il Fiorino è stata una delle prime monete d'oro coniate dopo la fine dell'Impero Romano, era una moneta d'oro di 3,54 grammi coniata per la prima volta nel 1252 a Firenze. Il nome deriva dal latino “flos” - “fiore” e porta sul sul dritto della moneta un giglio che rappresenta il simbolo del Comune di Firenze; sul rovescio, riportava l'immagine di San Giovanni Battista, patrono della città. La moneta, grazie alla potenza economica della Firenze di allora divenne, fino al Rinascimento, la moneta di riferimento usata negli scambi commerciali, una sorta di Dollaro dell'epoca.
Il nome Fiorino è usato tuttora nelle monete ungheresi (Forint) e polacche (Zloty), era anche la moneta olandese (Gulden) prima dell'Euro. La moneta veniva coniata nella Torre della Zecca, ultima delle torri delle mura della città prima dell'Arno, la torre attualmente non è visitabile, al suo interno, in un labirinto di sotterranei, venivano coniate le monete, uno di questi percorsi sotterranei attraversa addirittura l'Arno fino alla Torre di San Niccolò sulla sponda opposta.

Old Italian coins: the Florin
The Florin was one of the first golden coins minted after the end of the Roman Empire, it was a golden coin of 3.54 gr. minted for the first time in 1252 in Florence. The name comes from the latin “flos” - “flower” and bears on the obverse a lily that represents the symbol of the Comune of Florence; on the reverse the image of St. John the Baptist, the patron of the city. The currency, thanks to the economical power of Florence became until the Renaissance the currency of reference used in the trade exchanges, a sort of Dollar of the times. The name Florin is still used for the hungarian currency (Forint) and polish (Zloty), it was also the dutch one (Gulden) before Euro. The coin was minted in the Torre della Zecca (Tower of the Mint), the last tower of the city walls before the river, the tower now is not open to the public, inside, in a labirinth of underground basements, were minted the coins, one of the subterranean passages passes under the river until the San Niccolò Tower, by the other side of the river.
