The observatory cave
At the base of the Exotic Garden's cliff (called “the observatory” after the small astronomical observatory once located there), at 100 m in elevation, opens up an underground cavity which has been fit out for visits. The calcareous rock was hollowed out by water rich in carbon dioxide and is full of caverns complete with amazing concretions: stalactites, stalagmites, curtains, columns, spaghetti-like helictites, and more. The cave tour is included in the price of entrance to the Exotic Garden and is given by specialists. It goes from 98 m to 40 m in elevation. The cavity descends nearly to sea level and a favourite spot for local spelunkers.
The Cave was formed in a small massif of intensely fractured Upper Jurassic limestone that was easily eroded by runoff and infiltration of rainwater.
Limestone is relatively soluble and dissolves when in contact with water acidified by atmospheric carbon dioxide. It takes centuries and even millennia, however, however for these cracks to become fissures through this process.Furthermore, the limestone must be resistant enough for the cavities created not to cause the entire structure to subside and relatively pure to avoid filling in the new fissures. The Observatory Cave evolved according to this model with what was probably a greater mechanical component (rock fall visible at the start of the tour).
The many concretions in the cave are due to a chemical phenomenon that is reverse of corrosion. Thus, we can observe stalactites dangling from the ceiling, stalagmites rising from the ground, draperies, gours (little hollows in the calcite), etc.
The Exotic Garden of Monaco is open every day of the year except 19 November (National Holiday) and 25 December.
Summer hours (from 15 May to 15 September): 9 am to 7 pm.
Winter hours (from 16 September to 14 May): 9 am to 6 pm or nightfall.

La grotte de l'observatoire
A la base de la falaise du Jardin Exotique (dite « de l'observatoire » en raison de la présence ancienne d'un petit observatoire astronomique), à 100m d'altitude, s'ouvre une cavité souterraine aménagée pour les visites. La roche calcaire, creusée par l'eau chargée de gaz carbonique, est parsemée de cavernes ornées de concrétions aux noms évocateurs : stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, colonnes, spaghetti… La visite de la grotte, comprise dans le billet d'entrée au Jardin Exotique, est guidée par des spécialistes. Elle se déroule entre les cotes 98m et 40m. La cavité s'enfonce pratiquement jusqu'au niveau de la mer et elle est parcourue régulièrement par des spéléologues locaux.
Le Jardin Exotique de Monaco est ouvert toute l'année, sauf le 19 novembre (Fête Nationale) et le 25 décembre.

Die Grotte des Observatoriums
Am Fuß des Felsens des exotischen Gartens (genannt « Observatorium » nach einem einst hier gelegenen kleinen, astronomischen Observatorium) öffnet sich in 100 m Höhe eine unterirdische Höhle, die für Besucher ausgestattet wurde. Der kalkhaltige Stein, ausgehöhlt durch Kohlendioxid haltiges Wasser, ist übersät von Kavernen mit erstaunlichen Konkretionen: Stalaktiten, Stalagmiten, Schleier, Säulen, Spaghettiförmig… Der Besuch der Grotte, der im Eintrittspreis zum exotischen Garten enthalten ist, wird von einem Fachmann geleitet. Er findet in einer Höhe zwischen 98m und 40m statt. Die Höhle sinkt praktisch bis auf Meereshöhe und ist ein beliebter Ort für Hobbyhöhlenforscher.
Der exotische Garten von Monaco ist ganzjährig geöffnet, außer am 19. November (Nationalfeiertag) und 25. Dezember.
