Om IHINE-serien
Denne cachen er en del av IHINE-serien (Industrihistorie i Nedre
Eiker). Nedre Eiker har en lang historie som en utpreget
industrikommune, og hadde på 1950-tallet landets høyeste
prosentandel av innbyggerne sysselsatt i industrien. Cachene i
IHINE-serien tar deg med på en guidet tur blant det som i dag er
igjen av de største industrivirksomhetene. OBS: Hver av IHINE-cachene har et tall på innsiden av
lokket, disse tallene er en del av en senere bonuscache!

Om Krokstad Cellulose:
En av de første store industribedriftene som vokste opp i bygda på
slutten av 1800-tallet var Krokstad Cellulose som ble anlagt i
1893. Allerede fra starten var over 100 mann ansatt her, og
årsproduksjonen lå på 4.000 tonn tørrcellulose. Dette ble
mangedoblet i årenes løp. Virksomheten grep inn i alle deler av
bygda, og bidro til rask vekst i det lille samfunnet. Blant annet
ble dammen Årbogen, som i dag er en populær badeplass, demmet opp i
1897 for å sikre vann- og elektrisitetsforsyning til blant annet
'Cellulosen'. Rester av dette, blant annet den gamle rørledningen,
kan sees flere steder den dag i dag.
På 1960-tallet ble konkurransen fra utlandet for sterk og
Krokstad Cellulose måtte stenge portene for siste gang. I dag har
annen næring (hovedsaklig handel) overtatt området og mange av de
gamle bygningene, mens andre er revet for å gi plass til nye
bygninger. Fra cachen kan du flere av de gjenværende bygningene,
hvorav den største er 'spritkjerka' som står som et landemerke som
kan sees fra det meste av bygda. Den gamle oljetanken og
trafostasjonen lenger ned mot elva står omtrent som de gjorde da
fabrikken stengte, mens det gamle mekaniske verkstedet/lageret øst
for disse har blitt tatt i bruk til bilverksted. Ennå lenger øst,
ned mot elva langs kjøpesenteret ligger to generasjoner
administrasjonsbygninger. Her kan du fortsatt se det gamle skiltet
"Krokstad" over en av dørene.
Midt på 80-tallet åpnet.kjøpesenteret Spareland, forløperen til
det som i dag er Buskerud Storsenter, på en del av det gamle
fabrikkområdet. Dette ble starten på en sakte, men sikker
oppblomstring av ny næring i området som til da hadde ligget brakk.
I dag foreligger det planer om å slå sammen Buskerud Storsenter og
nabosenteret Krokstad Senter til ett, samtidig som det bygges bl.a.
et kulturhus på området der cachen i dag ligger. Prosjektet kalles
Buskerud Park og har vært gjenstand for mye lokalpolitisk krangel.
Dersom prosjektet gjennomføres vil de siste sporene etter den gamle
cellulosefabrikken - inkludert denne cachen - bli fjernet og bygget
over, så benytt sjansen til å se de siste restene av denne biten
med industrihistorie før fremskrittet sluker den!

About the IHINE caches
This cache is part of the IHINE series (Industrial History In Nedre
Eiker). Nedre Eiker has a long tradition as an industrial
municipality, and did in the 1950s have the highest percentage of
industrial workers in the country. The IHINE caches will take you
on a guidet tour through the remains of the most noteworthy of
these old industry sites. NB: Each of the
IHINE caches has a digit written on the lid of the box!
These digits sum up to the position of a coming bonus cache, so
make sure you record these numbers for later!
About Krokstad Cellulose:
One of the first large industries that grew up in the small village
at the end of the 19th century was Krokstad Cellulose, which was
established in 1893. Already from the beginning the factory
employed over a hundred workers, and its initial yearly production
was 4.000 tonnes of dry cellulose. Through the decades these
figures multipled many times. The factory involved all parts of the
village, and contributed to large growth in the small society. As
an example, the small pond "Årbogen" which is nowadays a popular
bathing site, was originally created to ensure water and
electricity to the factories down below. The remains of this
activity, like the old pipeline, can still be seen today in several
places.
In the 1960s the foreign competition became too strong and the
plant had to shut down. Today, other commerce (mostly shops) has
taken over the area and many of the old buildings, while others
have been torn down to allow new structures to be erected. From the
cache you are still able to see many of the remaining buildings, of
which the largest one is "spritkjerka" (directly translated "the
liquor church") which used to produce methanol, now standing as a
landmark to be seen from most parts of the village. The old oil
tank and the power plant further down by the river remain mostly as
the did when shut down 50 years ago. The old mechanical workshop
east of these however, is now used as a garage and auto repair
shop. Still further east, along the shopping mall and down to the
river, lie two generations of administration buildings. On one of
these, the old sign "Krokstad" may still be seen, hanging over one
of the doors.
In the middle of the 1980s the shopping mall "Spareland", later
"Buskerud Storsenter", opened on part of the old factory area. This
marked the start of a new era, where the old derelict factory was
slowly transformed from a deserted area into a flourishing
commercial centre. Today, plans exist to merge the two shopping
malls in the area into one, and in the process building a new
culture centre where the cache lies today. The project is called
"Buskerud Park" and has been subject to a lot of political debate
in the community. If the plans are carried out, all remains of the
once so proud cellulose factory will be leveled, so make sure you
log this cache before it is consumed by progress!
