Pan's Cave

Cave of Pan

The Cave of Pan took its name from the worship of the god Pan and the Nymphs. It is found at an altitude of 620m. on the northern end of the Keladona ravine (Gouras) near the point where the ravine meets the Bondias stream. It contains two chambers linked by a low, narrow passage. The cave is called "Lychnospilia",(Lychnos in Greek means lamp) thanks to the numerous lamps, about 2,000, found in archaeological research. The rocks, around the entrance of the cave which is almost covered by trees, there are carved from ancient wells for placement of offerings.

And now the cache...A cache for hardcore geocachers. One of the most popular hiking trails of Parnitha mountain is the circular route from the monastery "Kleiston" to the cave of Pan. The path start some meters before the entrance of the monastery where there is a wooden information sign and map of the trail. You need 5-6 hours to do this trail, so is better to begin early in the morning with appropriate equipment, Trekking shoes, clothes, hat, torch and of course water. The better season to do this path is the spring or the autumn. Don't try it with bad weather, rain or snow!!!

Another way is to proceed with your car after the junction of the monastery "Kleiston" and get to the point N38° 08.020, E23° 39.055.
There you will find the path that come from the monastery and continue to the cave. The whole path is very well marked with white-blue signs and some information signs along the trail. If you choose this path after you reach the cave, you have two options, one is to turn back on the already wellknown path to the start point, the other is to climb up the 10m high rock with the help of the wire rope that there is next to the cave and to continue your way to the monastery. If you take the decision to continue your way don't forget that after your arrival to the monastery you have also to do the route from the monastery until your start point.

The most easy way is to go with your car to the point N38° 08.805, E23° 38.807 where lies the spring of Fyli. Until there the road is asfalt. Then continue to the dirt road to the mountain (Hope that the gate will be open. It's closed the nights and the summer when there is a fire risk.) At the point N38° 08.855, E23° 39.332 turn south and continue to the end of the road at N38° 08.575, E23° 39.488. Now you have reached the middle of the distance to the cave. From here you have only 1,5-2 hours hiking (One way). At this point where there is an open field and an old sheepfold passes the path leading to cave, follow it with direction southeast. Attention. Don't follow the sign to the summit 'Arma', turn east.

Attention. The cache is not in the given coordinates but it is 2-3 meters away from a rock with a white/blue rectangle on it just outside the cave (No GPS signal there). You can see the spoiler photo.
