"Dall'inizio degli anni sessanta il nome della città viene associato con l'azienda Alfa Romeo, in quanto è qui che si trasferisce dalla storica sede del Portello ed è qui che nasce il più grande stabilimento della stessa.
L'impianto industriale Alfa Romeo di Arese ricopriva un'area molto ampia che spaziava dal comune di Lainate a quello di Garbagnate Milanese.
L'impianto è rimasto produttivo sino al 2005 anno in cui il gruppo FIAT, diventato proprietario dell'azienda dal 1986, ha terminato di produrre il motore V6 Busso. Già dal 2003 non si producevano più vetture, infatti in quell'anno Fiat ha trasferito l'assemblaggio delle proprie Fiat Multipla ecologiche a Mirafiori.
Attualmente nell'area restano attivi il Centro Stile, responsabile della ricerca sul design, la Powertrain, il cui indirizzo è lo sviluppo dei motori, ed il settore storico dell'azienda, che gestisce il Museo Storico Alfa Romeo ed il Centro Documentazione, punto di riferimento per appassionati e ricercatori a livello mondiale."
