Die Glühwürmchen sind Leuchtkäfer(Lampyridae), die in Mitteleuropa mit drei Arten vertreten sind. Bei allen Arten leuchten Käfer und Larven.
Das Männchen des Großen Glühwürmchens hat zwei kleine Leuchtflecke auf der Unterseite des Hinterleibes, die nur wenig wirksam sind. Es ist voll geflügelt und kann gut fliegen.
Das Weibchen ist flügellos, hat aber einen großen Leuchtapparat auf der Unterseite des Hinterleibes.
Die Leuchtzellen liegen auf einer refektierenden Schicht und enthalten Luziferin, das mit Sauerstoff zu Oxiluziferin oxidiert. Die dabei freigesetzte Energie wird fast nur in Form von Licht abgegeben, so dass sich ein Wirkungsgrad von bis zu 95 Prozent ergibt. Bisher hat keine künstlich hergestellte Lichtquelle einen so hohen Wirkungsgrad erreicht.
Die Lichtmenge beträgt etwa ein Tausendstel des Lichtes einer Kerze.
Die Leuchtsignale werden ausgesendet, damit männliche und weibliche Tiere zur Paarung zueinander finden.
Diese Nachtwanderung führt euch durch ein Paarungsgebiet der Glühwürmchen. Besonders im Hochsommer kann man sie leuchten sehen. Für den Rest des Jahres haben wir für Ersatz gesorgt. Allerdings müsst ihr dafür kräftig durch die Gegend leuchten.
Beim örtlichen Griechen könnt ihr euch vor oder nach der Wanderung stärken und an der Position N53°31.894' / E010°41.030 könnt ihr vorher den Sonnenuntergang genießen.

Glowworm is a night cache with 9 stages.
You have to cover a distance of 4,5 km.
Following tools are recommended:

The glowworms are lightning bugs (Lampyridae) and three species are existing in Central Europe. Bugs and larvas of all species are shining.
The male of the big glowworm has two little shining marks at the bottom side of its body, but they don't shine very bright. It is fully winged and could fly very well.
The female has no wings, but a big shining spot at the bottom side of its body.
The light emitting cells are on a reflective layer. They are containing Luziferin which oxidizes together with oxygen to Oxiluziferin. The emitted energy is almost only light. The efficiency is up to 95 percent. So far there is no synthesized source of light build with such high efficiency.
The amount of light is equal to one thousandth of a candlelight.
The light signals will be emitted that male and female glowworms are able to find each other for mating.
This night hike guides you through a mating area of glowworms. Particularly during warm summer nights you will see their lights. For the rest of the year we have installed a replacement. Mind you to use your flashlights to make them shine.
