Em Portugal, a cultura da Oliveira perde-se nos mais remotos tempos. Segundo rezam as crónicas, os Visigodos já a deviam ter herdado dos Romanos e estes, possivelmente, tinham-na encontrado na Península Ibérica. Por sua vez, os Árabes mantiveram a cultura e fizeram-na prosperar, sendo que a palavra Azeite tem origem no vocábulo árabe az-zait, que significa “sumo de azeitona”.
No largo D. João II, também conhecido como Largo da Mó, encontra-se, há pelo menos 35 anos, uma mó que pertencia a um lagar de azeite situado na actual Rua do Comércio onde se encontra a loja Pallo Ram. O seu funcionamento era através de correias movidas a gasóleo.
Existem registos datados do século XIX onde se fazia referência à quantidade de azeite que se fabricava na região falando inclusivamente na sua exportação.

The Millstone
Olive tree culture is known in Portugal since most remote times. According to ancient chronicles, Visigoths should have inherited it from the Romans and these, probably, had found it in the Iberian Peninsula. The Arabs maintained olive culture and made it prosper. The portuguese word "azeite" (olive oil) has its origin in the Arab word az-zait, which means "olive juice".
At D. João II Square, also known as Millstone Square, there is a millstone, for at least 35 years, that belonged to an olive oil mill formerly located at Rua do Comércio, in the place where is now Pallo Ram shop. This millstone worked through diesel powered belts.
There are some records from the XIX century that refer not only the amount of olive oil manufactured in this region but also its export.
